There’s a darned sight too much preaching going on these days.

It’s become almost mandatory for folks to examine their own life-styles, conclude that they live the best of all lives, and preach their mantra to the rest of the world.

What’s happened to “live and let live”?

I blame the Internet. Quick universal communication. It’s like this. Joe Bloggs concludes that he’s never felt healthier on a diet of snails and pupating caterpillars, so he devises a list of delicious dishes and tries to foist them on the rest of us because they’re good for us. Bound to be. He’s alive, isn’t he?

I’ve never felt better,” he says, “I’m bound to live to a hundred because of it.” And he beams his words at us like a big verbal smile.

But it’s not just that kind of lifestyle thing. There are others, and I’d better tread carefully here because I’m not totally innocent myself.

Take your happy atheist. He’s worked out that all the religious stuff that abounds is nonsense, and for the best possible reasons he takes up arms against organised religion as if he were a crusader wielding axe and sword.

Of course he might be totally wrong, but he’s sure he isn’t.

Take the Muslim who believes it must fall to him to convert all of humanity to his belief. Convert or kill is one interpretation of his guiding light, and he sets about it, words and actions, all that stuff. And especially when it comes to the purity and innocence of women.

Or the environmentalist. Pollution! We’re all doomed to perdition. The bees are dying, the flowers are unkissed by insect breath… we’re doomed! The air is full of toxins – we’d best not breathe too much of it…

Take the vegetarian who’s decided that fluffy animals are precious and beautiful and need protecting from nasty farmers. Whilst seeking refuge in pseudo-pacifist ideology they harangue the rest of us to follow their lead.

Or the anti-vivisection brigade who might just change their minds when cancer strikes home, and there’s a new cure involving fluffy white mice…

And the vegan. Dairy products? The work of the devil, that’s for sure, and killing us and the planet. And little fishes should be left to swim in the seas, shouldn’t they?

Then the Christian, proclaiming what he’s been told is obvious truth in ancient texts and being comforted by his belief as the years pass and he grows old…. Heaven’s waiting, and thank you Lord for healing the sick, pity the doctors for trying when you, God, got in first…

We can condemn the lot of them as liars and cheats and perpetrators of falsehood. Their falsehood, but one they see as truth. With a missionary zeal they try to show us how wrong we are.

With never a thought that there might be an error in their calculations.

With never the least whisper of a notion that they might be wrong.

Yes, there’s a darned sight too much preaching going on these days.

I know. Let’s live and let live.

I like this Peter. I’m agnostic, so I can’t be wrong (I think). Anyway, I try to keep an open mind.

I can’t imagine your mind being anything but open, Pam. We’re off on another little holiday soon, but I will continue posting stuff when we return.
